I continued reading in Genesis (chapters 21-25), and found several more “fun facts.” First, I am accustomed to hearing Jehovah-jireh being referred to as a name of God. Though the literal translation is “God will provide,” Jehovah-jireh was actually the name Abraham gave to the place where the ‘ram in the bush’ blessing took place (22:14).
A second find, was the new lifespan of mankind (120 years per 6:3) kicked in with Abraham & Sarah. Sarah was given a full life and an extra measure (dying at age 127 (23:1)), Abraham was given a full life with an even greater measure of God’s favor (dying at 175 (25:8)), and Ishmael–like is daddy–also became a father of many nations (promised (17:20), fulfilled (25:12-16))and lived a full life plus an extra measure (dying at age 137 (25:17)).
The last find, was that Isaac actually had seven (7) brothers, not just one [Ishmael]. When retelling the story of Abraham & Sarah, I have clearly missed a huge part of the “many nations” that Abraham was promised he’d be the father of. He was remarried after Sarah died to Keturah, who gave him six more sons–Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak & Shuah–for a total of eight (8) sons.
I look forward to seeing what other “fun facts” I have glossed over in my studies through the years!
